Reception: Saturday, June 2, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Anne B. Gunthner graduated from the University of North Texas with a major in Fashion Design and a minor in Art. She then went on to study fashion and general illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Art Students League, and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Ms. Gunthner worked for many years in retail advertising as both a layout artist and art director for newspaper and catalogs.

Retired from advertising, Ms. Gunthner continues to pursue her fine arts passion through teaching, workshops, and class studies. She has found great pleasure in working with various mediums including pastel, watercolor and oil. She also instructs workshops and art classes at The Village Artist of Huntington, NY. She is an associate member of the Pastel Society of America as well as a member of the Huntington Arts Council.

Ms. Gunthner has always been inspired by both American and European artists. Her pastel paintings reflect the vibrancy of color, texture, and light captured by Impressionist painters of the 19th & 20th centuries. The artist aims to capture the soul of her subject while keeping the composition fresh and alive to the very last stroke. Ms. Gunthner is currently working on a series of classical still life portraits which reflect the masterful skills of earlier European still life painters.

This exhibit captures a subject matter very near and dear to her heart. Ms. Gunthner seeks to bring the viewer into the beauty and grandeur of the local historic Gold Coast Mansion, Coindre Hall. In addition, she has captured her love and enthusiasm for the four-legged visitors which frequent the scenic grounds of this mansion on any given day.

The Library’s New Partnership…

Since January 2012, Huntington Public Library has been engaged in a new partnership with the national non-profit Raising a Reader (RAR) to bring their award-winning program to Huntington’s Head Start children. The Library chose to become an RAR community partner – the first library on Long Island to do so – because we believe the program addresses important needs in our community and we expect to reap cost-effective benefits that may serve as a model for others.

Recognizing that nearly half of all U.S. children enter kindergarten lacking the early reading skills necessary for success in school, Raising a Reader’s mission is to help all children enter kindergarten in love with the printed page and ready to learn to read. The organization’s key strategy is to engage parents and children, from birth to age five, in a routine of daily “book cuddling” to foster healthy brain development, parent-child bonding and early literacy skills – all critical for school success.

RAR works through a network of over 2,500 community partners across 30 states and has reached over 700,000 children since 1999, a large percentage living at or below poverty level. Kindergarten Readiness studies indicate that children who participated in the program for eight months scored twice as high as the national norms in book knowledge, story comprehension, and print concepts. Spanish speaking children tested almost three times higher in story comprehension. (See RAR’s website at www.raisingareader.org)

Librarians Andrea Pavlik and Corinna Jaudes of the Youth & Parent Services department attended RAR training to learn how to implement the program in our community. In January 2012, they began visiting periodically with Huntington Head Start preschoolers, their teachers and parents, bringing along an enticing selection of books for children to take home and helping families develop the habit of sharing those books – in hopes that the children and their families fall in love with reading together.

As of April 2012, Raising a Reader is well underway at Huntington Head Start. A librarian visits every other week to read to three classes and bring each child a red bag of books to take home. Head Start staff is impressed by how attentive the children are when the librarian reads to them and how remarkably well these young children are caring for the books (they return each set after a week). Assistant teacher Michele Ancrum points out the contrast between the shiny, new books and Head Start’s own well-worn collection, and notes that for these kids, “the red bag of books is something special.” Parents have been instructed in “book cuddling” and received a DVD (in 14 languages) about the program. They’re happy to report that their children are asking for book time together at home and, sometimes, beg to keep a book an extra week.

That’s great news!

Reception: Saturday, April 14, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Kate Kelly, active in the arts community as a visual artist and a poet, has published her work in numerous small press magazines including Voices International, DICO, Oasis d’Neon, Humanities, Pegasus, PPA Literary Reviews, Xanadu, and The Long Island Quarterly. In 2005, she was recognized as a New York State Woman of Distinction by Senator John Flanagan.

“The first thing one can notice about Kate’s work is depth, and the feeling that one looks into a space that goes back and back with images fading into a misty distance,” according to artist William Pardue. Mr. Pardue further states that “the second thing noticed is texture. Many of her works seem to have a gritty texture on the outer layer that would feel rough and granular if one could get through the glass and feel them. However these are skillful illusions, because Kate’s final works are computer printouts, beautifully mounted with heavy mats.”

Kate expands on her artistic technique by using Adobe Photoshop software to enhance her images to create original works difficult to create in other ways. This software has a layering method that allows the user to stack and shift images like that of animation artists. Kate shadows her images to create a mysterious and intriguing effect. This visual effect grabs the viewer into picture before they realize their eye has been caught by the image.

Kate lives in Northport and has served as an associate editor of the online poetry magazine, Poetry Bay. She is a member of the Bare Bones Theater Company in Northport, NY, and has curated several exhibits for the Art League of Long Island and the Northport Arts Coalition. She is a founding member and first co-chair of the Northport Arts Coalition and now serves on their advisory board.

March 1, 2012 – March 30, 2012

Reception: Saturday, March 10, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Janet McLaughlin didn’t realize that looking at the fabric in her Aunt’s sewing store every summer would have such an effect on her later in life. It made her feel so good just looking at all those beautiful calicos in so many different colors. However, it was not until she was in her late 20s that she began to make use of all those “feel good” memories. Janet had been making her own clothes for years but it wasn’t until she saw a show on quilting that she was mesmerized! The show demonstrated how you could take small pieces of fabric and make designs out of them, and that was what captured her imagination. She joined a quilting club, checked books out from her local library, and got started on her first quilt. That was in 1983, and Janet hasn’t stopped quilting since.

Janet has been showing her quilts in local libraries for the past two years. The response she has received from these exhibits has been so positive that she is now looking to reach a larger audience. Her website, Custom Quilts, features photos of the quilts that she has been showing along with their dimensions and ordering information. These quilts are machine pieced and machine quilted on a Bernina Aurora 440. The bindings, however, are hand sewn. Some of the patterns are taken from popular quilt magazines and some are simply hand drawn while others were inspired by classes taken at quilt guilds. Special orders are taken for special occasions, but need to be taken months in advance. The batting is usually a Harriet Hargrave low loft cotton batting and the fabrics are made of 100% cotton.

Ross Barbera’s work focuses on the natural sunlit world of the northeast landscape. His paintings range from extreme close-ups of pond surfaces, trees, forest floors, leaves, and flowers to more encompassing views. Ross creates in acrylic on canvas. He is inspired by the interplay and rich diversity of textural surfaces, form and color elements within these natural places, especially on water surfaces. His paintings capture close-up views of intimate forest settings. Abstraction discovered in the microcosmic is the primary motivation for his flower paintings.

Ross Barbera was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1950, and spent most of his summers at family homes in Smithtown, NY, and Peakville, NY. During these vacations he discovered the natural landscape and spent much of his childhood drawing and painting. In his youth he participated in Saturday art programs at the Brooklyn Museum and at the Pratt Institute. In 1975, he received his MFA in painting from the Pratt Institute.

He has exhibited at the Razor Gallery in Soho in the 70s, and at the OK Harris Annex in Lower Manhattan in the 80s and 90s. During that time he also exhibited regularly at the Manhattan’s Jean Lumbard Gallery, and the Clark Whitney Gallery in Massachusetts. His work has been exhibited in galleries and juried exhibitions throughout the United States.

His awards include a National Endowment for the Arts Painting Fellowship, a New York State CAPS fellowship in painting, and a grant from the Hillwood Art Museum – Long Island University C. W. Post campus. Since 1980, Ross Barbera has been on the faculty of St. John’s University in the Department of Fine Arts. He currently serves as the Department’s chairperson.

Michael Fairchild grew up in Colombia and Brazil, where he acquired a love of travel and natural history. He has been a freelance photographer since 1970, after his graduation from Wesleyan University. His photography has been published by Kodak, the Saturday Evening Post, Nikon, Time-Life Books, Audubon, Fortune, Travel and Leisure, Vanity Fair, the Sierra Club and National Geographic Books.

While at home in Huntington, Fairchild photographs weddings, does portraiture, public relations work, and corporate and human interest video production. He has also produced 15 audio visual productions used in schools, libraries, museums, and corporate events.

Fairchild has traveled the world photographing people, wildlife, nature, and architecture. He searches for fresh perspectives honed by years of observation and now aided by new digital photographic technology. His images evoke the freshness of things seen for the first time. He finds this freshness in the intricate delicacy of a peacock’s tail feathers or the broad sweep of centuries at the Roman Forum. He illuminates the drama and grandeur in all that he documents.

Fairchild comments that, “Often the choice is not what to take pictures of. Unlike conventional art that starts with a blank canvas, the photographer’s canvas is often overcrowded, and filled with exciting but discordant elements that vie for attention. The photographer as an artist must search for hidden harmonies and powerful juxtapositions while eliminating unwanted clutter. The journey is as much fun as the destination. Capturing images of beauty to share is my life’s passion.”
