Built in 1892, the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building was constructed as a memorial to the 40 local residents who died in the Civil War. It was the site of the original Huntington Public Library. To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the end of the Civil War, the Huntington Town Clerk’s Archives and the Huntington Public Library initiated town wide events commencing in April 2015. With Huntington Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia’s support and assistance, and with the assistance of the Huntington Historical Society, the Huntington Town Historian’s Office, Northport Historical Society, Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association, Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum, Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum, Huntington Chamber of Commerce, Walt Whitman Birthplace, Huntington Arts Council, African American Historic Designation Council, and the North Shore Civil War Roundtable, events have been planned through October 2015. Stay Tuned!!
Our 2015-2016 operating budget was approved by a margin of 423 - 88.

Now that the harsh weather of this past winter is behind us, hopefully we can all start to enjoy some warmer and more pleasant days! Did any of you see us marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade? I think Huntington considers that the unofficial first day of spring! We lucked out with a beautiful day and it was wonderful to see so many spectators cheering us on as we marched along.
We are busy at the library these days planning our renovation for the Main Library. We have completed the analysis of our collections and are anxiously awaiting some preliminary plans from our space designers.
In response to many patron requests, our new fiscal year budget includes expanding our operating hours to more closely coincide with the school year. We will stay open on Sundays and Friday evenings now from mid-September through mid-June. I thank all of you who came out to vote in our annual Budget Vote and Trustee Election.
