For thousands of years, before Europeans settled on Long Island, the Shinnecock and other Native American Indian tribes, called the island “home”. They ensured early settlers’ survival during their first winter by helping them to prepare shelters, teaching them how to hunt, fish, and farm in their new location. Janine Tinsley-Roe, founder of The Shinnecock-Sewanaka Society Inc., and Thom Hoffman, filmmaker, produced the film Shinnecock to bring awareness to this important part of Long Island history. This program of film, lecture, and Q&A, presents the history, culture, and unique perspectives of the Native people. It is a microcosm for nation-wide efforts advocating social justice, environmental stewardship, and re-examination of the unjust portrayal of Native history. Registration required. Open to all.
