First, I want to thank all of you who came out to vote in our annual Budget Vote and Trustee Election. Your support is very important to us and we are continually trying to find ways to make your library experience a positive and rewarding one. Thanks to you all, our proposed budget passed with 201 voting yes and 34 voting no, and Charles Rosner will also remain a Trustee for another term.
I am also happy to announce that we have hired H2M architects + engineers to work with us on our building renovation at the main library. H2M is a professional consulting and design firm located on Route 110 in Melville. They have been in business for over 80 years, and have worked with many local school districts and libraries on various projects. The first step in working with them has been sharing the reports from the focus groups we conducted last year along with the preliminary floor plans we received from our consultants. They are reviewing all of this information and have already been on-site to do their own evaluation of the building. We are now awaiting their proposal for the next step in this process.
Some other exciting news, in response to patron requests and in an effort to provide better service, our new fiscal year budget includes expanding our operating hours on Friday nights to stay open during the summer months. We will now be open on Fridays from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm all year long.
One other major development is that our library will be re-joining the PALS (Partnership of Automated Library Systems) consortium in the fall. This will enable our patrons to pick up their hold items at any library in the county and will make the process of borrowing items from other libraries much easier.
