James J. Kolb, PhD, presents the historical context in which opera blossomed in Italy in the 19th century and assesses the impact of these composers on the operatic form. When people think of opera, first and foremost Italian opera comes to mind, particularly the work of Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) or Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924). Two of the three most frequently performed operas are Verdi’s Aïda and Puccini’s La Bohème (the third is Bizet’s Carmen). Their work spans nearly a century, with at least two dozen of their works in the standard repertory of most of the world’s opera houses.   Registration required. Open to all.

Happy Holidays!

Thank you to all who participated in the first annual Great Give Back program in October. This was a county-wide event for everyone to give back to your community! We had many people stopping in to write cards for veterans and hospital patients, as well as donating pet food for local animal shelters. I am constantly amazed at the generosity of our patrons, which can easily be seen by the participation we get in our community drives and our collection boxes in the lobby.

The lighting project at our Main Street location has begun and we thank you for your patience and understanding during this process. The installation of new LED lights will not only make for better lighting, but will also help us keep our utility costs down.

In addition to all that goes on inside our buildings, you may also have seen us out in the community as we visited the schools during Back-to-School nights; participated in Huntington Awareness Day, the Draw Out event sponsored by the Heckscher Museum, and joined our neighboring libraries at the Fall Festival in Heckscher Park.

This year, the Town of Huntington's 8th Annual Holiday Parade will take place on Sunday, November 26th. Please join us at the library before the parade for some arts and crafts in the children’s room.

I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and a Joyous Holiday Season!

If you have any questions or concerns about the library, please feel free to contact me at any time at (631) 427-5165, x 206, or by email at .
